What Is Water Birth?

Nature's most effective pain relief

Water birth is the practice of laboring and/or delivering in a tub full of warm water. The buoyancy of water reduces the effective weight of the body, relieves pressure, and allows freedom of movement that's difficult to achieve on land.

Many families choose water birth for its natural pain-relieving properties — the warm water relaxes muscles, reduces tension, and can significantly decrease the perception of pain during contractions.

At Texas Family Birth & Wellness, both of our private birth suites are equipped with full hydrotherapy tubs. You may labor in the water, birth in the water, or do both — the choice is yours, and you can change your mind at any point.

Benefits of Hydrotherapy

Why families choose water birth

😌

Natural Pain Relief

Warm water relaxes muscles and reduces the sensation of contractions — often dramatically. Many families report the tub as the most effective pain management tool available to them.

🤸

Freedom of Movement

Buoyancy makes it easier to move, shift positions, and find comfort during labor — helping baby descend and rotate into optimal position for birth.

🧘

Reduced Stress & Anxiety

The warmth and quiet of the water creates a calming environment. Lower stress hormones during labor supports a more efficient, progressive labor.

👶

Gentle Entry for Baby

For babies born in water, the transition from womb to world is gradual — from the warm fluid of the womb into warm water, then lifted gently into their mother's arms.

🌿

Reduced Perineal Trauma

Research suggests water birth is associated with lower rates of perineal tearing and episiotomy — a meaningful benefit for recovery.

⏱️

Labor Progression

Hydrotherapy is associated with shorter active labor duration and reduced need for augmentation in low-risk pregnancies.

Is Water Birth Right for You?

Candidacy & safety

Water birth is appropriate for low-risk pregnancies and is supported by the American College of Nurse-Midwives as a safe option for carefully selected candidates.

You may be a good candidate if you:

  • Are low-risk with a healthy, singleton pregnancy
  • Are at term (37–42 weeks)
  • Have no active infection or fever during labor
  • Have clear amniotic fluid
  • Have a baby in a vertex (head-down) position

Kristen will review your specific health history and pregnancy during prenatal care to confirm your candidacy. If circumstances change during labor, she will guide you to the safest option in the moment.

What to Expect

What actually happens

During Active Labor

You enter the tub when active labor is established. Kristen monitors baby's heart tones continuously with a waterproof Doppler. The water is maintained at body temperature.

At the Moment of Birth

Baby is born underwater and brought gently to the surface — guided by you or Kristen. Baby takes their first breath as soon as they reach air. The transition is calm and unhurried.

After Birth

You exit the tub for placenta delivery and initial newborn assessment. Skin-to-skin begins immediately. The rest of your postpartum time is spent in the birth suite with your family.
