Frequently Asked Questions

Everything You Want to Know About TFBW

Answers to the most common questions about birth center care, midwifery, pricing, insurance, water birth, transfers, and what it's actually like to have your baby here.

Safety & Candidacy

Yes. Birth centers are designed for low-risk pregnancies and staffed by certified nurse-midwives trained to identify and manage complications. We have transfer relationships with four hospitals within 10 minutes — three for mom and one children's hospital for baby. Kristen also holds privileges at Methodist Celina Medical Center so you still receive midwifery care in the case of a transfer.
Birth center care is appropriate for low-risk pregnancies of women with no uncontrolled chronic conditions. During your free Discovery Consultation, Kristen will review your health history to determine candidacy. If you're unsure, just come in — that's what the consultation is for.
In most cases, transfers are done in a shared decision-making manner. Our goal is always to identify the need early and move proactively. In the few and rare occasions where unforeseen emergencies arise, Kristen is trained to identify the deviation from normal and act with calmness and clarity. This allows the best opportunity to receive hospital and physician support to keep you and baby safe.
Kristen monitors you and your baby's health closely throughout your prenatal care. If a complication develops that changes your risk level, she will discuss your options honestly and help coordinate the right level of care for your situation. Problem visits are included at no extra charge — we want you to reach out any time you have concerns.

Pricing & Insurance

The all-inclusive birth package covers all prenatal visits, standard lab work, in-house ultrasounds (first trimester and anatomy scans), a birth assistant, labor and birth in our private suites, lactation support at 3–5 days postpartum, all postpartum visits (24-hour, 2-week, 6-week), newborn screenings, birth certificate filing, and problem visits at no extra charge. We never nickel-and-dime families for reassurance calls or unexpected concerns.
At this time we are working to become in-network with several insurance companies. In the meantime, we are happy to provide a superbill for all care received so you can submit to your insurance provider. Depending on your plan, you may be reimbursed for some of those costs.
Yes. Payment plans are available. Call us at (469) 481-6169 to discuss options that work for your family's financial situation.
Yes. HSA and FSA funds can generally be used for birth center care and midwifery services. We recommend confirming with your plan administrator for your specific account details.

Care & Services

Kristen Parks, APRN-CNM will be your midwife at every prenatal visit and will attend your birth. A highly-trained birth assistant will also be at your birth so you know both you and your baby will be watched over and your birth space protected.
Certified Nurse-Midwives are advanced practice registered nurses with graduate-level training in midwifery and women's health. CNMs practice a continuity-of-care model — same provider every visit, longer appointments, and a focus on supporting normal physiologic birth. OBs are surgical specialists trained primarily to manage high-risk pregnancies and obstetric emergencies. For low-risk pregnancies, research consistently supports midwifery care as safe and often associated with better outcomes and higher patient satisfaction.
Yes. Both private birth suites are equipped with a tub that can be used for hydrotherapy during labor and birth. Water birth is included in the all-inclusive package at no additional charge. You may also labor in the tub without birthing in the water — the choice is yours in the moment.
Yes. Nitrous oxide (laughing gas) is available as a safe, effective option for labor pain management. It takes the edge off contractions without affecting your mobility or significantly impacting your baby, and wears off quickly.
Epidurals require an anesthesiologist and are not available at a birth center. If you decide during labor that you want an epidural, we will facilitate a calm, planned transfer to a nearby hospital. We support your decision completely. Changing your birth plan to include an epidural is not a failure. Midwifery care is still important with an epidural, maybe even more so, and Kristen is dedicated to supporting you and advocating for you if you desire IV pain management or an epidural.
Three postpartum visits are included: a 24–48 hour visit, a 2-week visit, and a 6-week visit. Newborn screenings (metabolic, hearing, congenital heart), birth certificate filing, lactation support, and postpartum depression screening are all included. Problem visits between appointments are also at no additional charge.

Getting Started

As early as possible — ideally 6–10 weeks. The earlier you come in, the more time you have to make an informed decision on what birth setting is right for you and your family. Establishing care early in pregnancy allows you to build your relationship with Kristen well before your birth day.
You'll tour both private birth suites, meet Kristen, review your health history to confirm candidacy, discuss pricing and payment options, and ask every question you have. No exam, no paperwork, no obligation. It's simply a conversation.
We serve families throughout Collin County and surrounding North Texas communities including Prosper, Celina, McKinney, Frisco, Allen, and beyond. We want to provide midwifery care to anyone in North Texas who desires it and is in the vicinity of the birth center.
